Lawyers reserve the right to refuse service when: a) the client does not make timely compensation; b) the client wants the attorney to commit illegal or unethical acts; c) the client lies and does not undo the same; d) the client makes it unreasonably difficult for the lawyer to represent him or her; and e) representing the client would give rise to a conflict of interest. On the other hand, lawyers must: a) keep private communications with the client in confidentiality; b) keep the client updated with the status of the case; c) abide by the clients directives concerning the representations objectives; and d) defend the clients interests and respond to his or her concerns. As mentioned above, lawyers have many duties other than providing legal advice and legal representation. These responsibilities are placed on them to make sure that their practice of law is not abused and unethical. As their profession gives them privileges to perform many legal tasks, it is also coupled with principles and ethics that they are expected to uphold.

Lawyers are commonly employed to provide legal advice. Be informed that directions on how to proceed with a legal matter is not legal advice per se. Legal advice constitute the application of legal principles and rules based on factual information. Legal advice can be sought usually from a lawyer only. However, there are countries that allow for non-licensed individuals to provide the same. Another touted facet of a lawyers duty is his representation in behalf of a client in court. Legal representation is highly encouraged in courts as the practice of law requires special skills and knowledge. An individual thats uneducated in the practice of law may prove to be inept and would be considered a liability in court. Legal representation places responsibilities on both the attorney and the client. #web2.0
